Feng Shui Bedroom Tips to Help You Sleep (and Live) Better

by Jessica Khudeida

A feng shui bedroom is a peaceful and balanced environment that promotes quality sleep. In feng shui philosophy, the bedroom is the most important room of the home as it is the room, and personal space, that you spend the most time in. Unbalanced energy in the bedroom can affect our health, finances, and relationships.

So, what can you do to adhere to feng shui principles and create a bedroom that promotes a harmonious flow of nourishing, vibrant, and relaxing energy? One that invites you to relax in it at the end of your day.

Start by decluttering. Not only is clutter distracting to the eye, but it can also block the flow of energy, disturb your sleep, and keep things in your life from moving forward. Make sure you’re sleeping on a quality mattress with attractive bedding.

Next, consider these aspects feng shui practitioners look at when they analyze a bedroom from the classical feng shui perspective:

Room layout

Shape of the room

A rectangular or square-shaped bedroom best promote good bedroom feng shui, allowing energy to circulate freely.

Odd shapes create imbalanced energy, and so disturb your sleep and health. Examples are a triangular shape – and therefore sharp corners, a circular shape, and an L-shape. Try adding a screen or cabinet to create a square shape in the room.

Placement of the bed – and therefore sleeping position

According to feng shui masters, the direction in which you sleep can affect your luck in attracting money, success, health, good personal relationships, and personal development.

To determine which feng shui directions are most favorable to you, you need to calculate your Gua number using your date of birth and gender.

Place your bed in the command position, so that when you’re in bed you face the door, while the bed is not directly in line with the door – believed in to be the position of the dead (“to go feet first”) – in feng shui. When your bed is directly aligned with your doorway, the energy flows too quickly, something that can feel unsettling and disrupt your sleep. In case you’re not able to rearrange the bed away from the door, you can place a divider in front of the bedroom door.

Placing your bed on the same wall as your door may cause you to feel threatened, as though someone might surprise you in your sleep.

For a feeling of support and protection, make sure you place your headboard against a solid wall, and so that there is space available on the other three sides of the bed.

If the wall behind your headboard has a window, place your bed so that you’re not sleeping directly under it, as it may weaken your energy due to lack of proper support and protection. If this is not possible, you can use curtains to block the window while you sleep.

Avoid placing your bed directly under low beams, sloped ceilings, or a ceiling fan or chandelier that points at your body (feng shui poison arrow) as this is believed to create a downward flow of energy that will drain your energy and negatively affects your sleep.

Make sure your headboard is not set against a wall that has a toilet behind it, as energy is rushed out of the bathroom. If you live in a duplex, avoid sleeping above a kitchen or a bathroom.

Place a bedside table on both sides of your bed to create a balanced flow of energy.

Environment outside the bedroom

A bedroom is best situated in the back of a house rather than the front. Bedrooms near the street or in the front of a home can be too active and noisy, affecting your quality of sleep.

The electromagnetic field generated by an electricity tower near a bedroom can be harmful to your body and health.

For good energy and health, a supporting element such as a taller building, hill, or mountain outside your bedroom would best promote a good flow of energy, rather than, for example, a water formation, river, or sea.

Ideally, you would have a spacious open area (in feng shui called “bright hall”) outside your bedroom, as this promotes prosperity.

Bedroom accessories

According to feng shui, if you aren’t sleeping well, a mirror in your bedroom may be to blame. Mirrors are believed to bounce energy around the bedroom, which may cause you to feel worried and restless.

It is particularly important not to hang a mirror on the wall opposite your bed as it depletes your personal energy when you need it the most: during nighttime when your body is doing most of its repair work. It is also believed to promote the intrusion of a third person into a couple’s relationship and may encourage cheating.

Hang only inspiring, relaxing, or uplifting images in your bedroom. On the wall opposite your bed would be a good spot, so that you see it first thing when you wake up and the last thing before you fall asleep. Avoid hanging large paintings or photographs on the wall above your head – they can produce the same poor energy flow as a window or beam.

Avoid photos of paintings featuring only one person as they represent solitude. And while water represents money in other parts of the house, images that dominantly feature a lake, river, or waterfall may promote financial losses or relationship problems.

Choose accessories you love to optimize the energy of your bedroom. Carefully selected pillows, blankets, and other accessories can enhance the room’s energy.

Colors used in the room

Decorate with relaxing colors. Earthy, neutral colors provide a sense of support and relaxation.

Lighting

Good, appropriate lighting is essential, as light is our Number One nutrient and one of the strongest manifestations of energy. Candles are the best feng shui bedroom lighting, as they not only clear the energy but also create a very intimate, warm, and healing atmosphere. (When buying candles, check the ingredients to be sure your candles are toxin-free.). Aim also for dimmable bedside floor lamps or table lamps with soft light and avoid a light hanging directly above your bed.

Electronics

Computers, televisions, exercise equipment symbolize wakefulness, take up energy, and distract from rest. They also give off electromagnetic energy while you sleep. If you’re not able to remove this from the bedroom, store and hide them from sight as best you can. You may place the TV in a cabinet with doors if possible or cover it with a cloth at night. You might place a room screen so that it blocks your view of your exercise equipment.

Turn off your any electronics in the bedroom at night and be sure to place your Wi-Fi router outside the room. If you must keep smaller electronics such as your phone in the bedroom, place them at least one meter away from your head as you sleep.

Air quality

Open the windows often or use a good quality air-purifier to keep the air in your bedroom fresh and full of oxygen. Be mindful of the quality of air in your bedroom. You cannot have good feng shui in your bedroom if the air you breathe in is stale and polluted.

A bedroom should be a space of clarity, health, wisdom, inspiration, relaxation, & intimacy. It’s our” last resort” at the end of the day, so invest in it wisely! Even by making a few changes in your bedroom, you can take steps toward more positive energy and better-quality sleep within your bedroom. Give them a try!
